CHAPTER 10
Work From Home For The Rest Of Your Life
How would you like to stay at home and work in your pajamas? Every day, more people are interested in work from home careers. Some people opt for it because they prefer the life of telecommuting or their other options has been exhausted. There are obvious conveniences that a work from home career offers, whether itâs saving time and money from commuting to work, or increasing family time.
Flexibility is a huge benefit to working at home. Most jobs have fixed work hours. Some of the companies that are mentioned in this chapter will allow you to work split shifts to accommodate your schedule.
One of the greatest benefits about working at home is the money that youâll save in expenses.
Food expenses. More than half of people spend at least $5 to buy breakfast and/ or lunch during their work shift. When you are working at home, your food expenses will go down since youâll be much more likely to make those meals at home.
Transit expenses. More than half of people use public transit or drive to work every day. When you are working at home, you can save money on fuel, parking and maintenance costs. You also may save money on car insurance if your insurer offers a reduced rate for fewer miles driven each month. Public transit users can save money on fares.
Child care expenses. More than one-third of people pay for some form of child care. When you are working at home, you can save money by keeping your kids occupied with something while you are working.
You might be convinced that working home is right for you. Can you picture yourself sitting at your home desk with your favorite cup of coffee in your most comfortable clothing? Can you see yourself having your breaks on your porch or in your living room? You donât have to worry about office politics because youâll never be at the office! When your workday is over, you can go about doing what you normally would without worrying about commuting. This is how I live everyday and you can too!
There are 2 ways to get started. The first way to start is by a slow transition. You can take a part-time work from home job as secondary income. You can try it to see if you like it. If so, transitioning into full-time work shouldnât be difficult at all. The second way is go straight for a full-time work from home position. This is probably best for people who are currently unemployed or need to stay at home to care for their children.
As with any job, there are always expectations, even for virtual positions. Most of these companies require that you work in a quiet environment. This is especially true for call center positions. They expect you to be a self-starter and a problem solver who requires little to no supervision. Are you good at managing your own time? You will be expected to have good time management skills.
